Travel

All aboard!
One reason Germans love trains is the ICE ‑ a high‑speed express that travels from Munich to Berlin in just six hours! That’s about the distance from San Francisco to Los Angeles, or from Washington D.C. to Boston.
Half empty or full?
In English, we’d say 9:30 is half past nine, but in German, it’s half ten!
Die Abfahrt ist um halb drei.
The departure is at half past two. (Literally: The departure is at half three.)
Der Zug kommt um halb sechs.
The train is coming at half past five. (Literally: The train is coming at half six.)
Are we there yet?
Not yet! But if you’re hungry, just go to the Speisewagen and eat something there. Spaghetti bolognese, goulash, chili con carne ‑ you can have it all! Well, maybe not all at once.
