Para falar de algo que você queria que tivesse acontecido no passado, você pode dizer I wish it had happened ou if only it had happened.
I wish you had told me that sooner!
If only I hadn’t missed my chance!
Você pode dizer we have been studying para falar de algo que começou no passado e ainda está acontecendo.
I have been trying to call you since nine!
John has only been living here for a few months.
Para falar de algo que estava acontecendo mas terminou, você diria we had been studying.
She had been living in Mexico until she moved to New York.
They had already been playing for an hour when we joined them.
