You've already come across cosa, which means what.

What do the books say?

What is there on the screen?
But when you're not asking a question, the word cosa simply means thing.
Ho la stessa cosa.
I have the same thing.
Non hai mai tempo per le cose importanti.
You never have time for the important things.

Macchina is the most common way to say car in Italian.
La macchina è senza benzina.
The car is out of gas.
Automobile is another way to say car in Italian. Keep in mind, though, that automobile sounds a bit more formal than macchina.
L'automobile ha un motore nuovo.
The car has a new engine.
Macchina also can just mean machine in general, depending on context.
