Different ways of writing
The writing system katakana is used mostly for words borrowed from other languages. Like hiragana, each character represents a syllable. Hiragana and katakana can be mixed in the same sentence. In the following example, pizza and cake are in katakana:
ピザケーキ
[piza to keeki]
pizza and cake
On topic
Using [wa] after a word makes it the topic of the sentence. The rest of the sentence is a comment about it.
カレーおいしいです。
[karee wa oishii desu]
Curry is tasty.
The hiragana is only pronounced wa as a topic marker. Otherwise, it is pronounced ha.
Questions
Putting [ka] at the end of a sentence turns a statement into a question. Notice that a period is still used!
おいしいです
[oishii desu ka]
Is it tasty?
