Different ways of writing
The writing system katakana is used mostly for words borrowed from other languages. Like hiragana, each character represents a syllable. Hiragana and katakana can be mixed in the same sentence. In the following example, pizza and cake are in katakana:
ピザとケーキ
[piza to keeki]
pizza and cake
On topic
Using は [wa] after a word makes it the topic of the sentence. The rest of the sentence is a comment about it.
カレーはおいしいです。
[karee wa oishii desu]
Curry is tasty.
The hiragana は is only pronounced wa as a topic marker. Otherwise, it is pronounced ha.
Questions
Putting か [ka] at the end of a sentence turns a statement into a question. Notice that a period is still used!
おいしいですか。
[oishii desu ka]
Is it tasty?
