Common Phrases

Greetings
Many Portuguese greetings depend on the time of day.
Bom dia!
Good morning!
Note that even though Bom dia includes the word dia, it’s only used in the morning (or at least before you’ve had lunch!).
Boa tarde!
Good afternoon!
Boa noite.
Good evening! / Good night!
Boa noite can mean both Good evening and Good night.
Tudo bem?
You can also greet someone by asking how they’re doing. Just use Tudo bem? at any time of the day. And to reply, you can say Tudo bem too!
Tudo bem?
Is everything fine?
Sim, tudo bem!
Yes, everything is fine.
Thank you!
Good manners are important! To thank people, use obrigado if you are a man or a boy, and obrigada if you are a woman or a girl. To reply, anyone can just say De nada!
Obrigado, Andreia!
Thank you, Andreia!
De nada!
You’re welcome!
Another way to say thanks is valeu. Anyone can use that, but generally it’s pretty casual.
