This and that
The words for this and that in Portuguese, isto and isso, are very similar, so let's have a look at them.
Isto é um peixe.
This is a fish.
O que é isso na tua mão?
What is that in your hand?
Because they're so similar, Portuguese speakers often use isso to mean isto and vice versa. To make the meaning clearer, add aqui and aí after them.
Isto aqui é um cachorro.​
This is a dog. (Literal: This here is a dog.)
O que é isso aí na tua mão?
What is that in your hand? (Literal: What is that there in your hand?)
This and this
In Portuguese, words like this and that change when they're followed by a noun! Here's how they look before masculine nouns:
Isto é um livro.
This is a book.
Este livro é novo.
This book is new.
Isso é um livro.
That is a book.
Esse livro é novo.
That book is new.
