Disto, disso, daquilo...
Portuguese can be very concise! Here's how the word de smooshes together with isto, isso and aquilo.
de + isto → disto
de + isso → disso
de + aquilo → daquilo
de + isso → disso
de + aquilo → daquilo
Não gosto disto!
I don't like this!
The same type of smooshing happens with words like este, esse and aquele.
Você gosta desta blusa?
Do you like this shirt?
Ela gosta dessas luvas.
She likes those gloves.
Eu preciso daqueles sapatos.
I need those shoes.
Nisto, nisso, naquilo...
Not to be outdone, em also smooshes together with isso, isto and aquilo.
em + isto → nisto
em + isso → nisso
em + aquilo → naquilo
em + isso → nisso
em + aquilo → naquilo
Nós somos bons nisso.
We are good at that.
Surprise! The same happens with words like este, esse and aquele. Notice how the m of em turns into an n.
A carta está neste livro.
The letter is in this book.
Tem uma formiga nessa camisa.
There is an ant in that shirt.
Eu coloco manteiga naquelas batatas.
I put butter on those potatoes.
A + A = À
The small word a is a little bit pickier and it only smooshes together with aquilo, aquele and aquela.
Ele dá café àquela mulher.
He gives coffee to that woman.
The mark over the a in àquela shows there are two a's smooshed together.
Eu vendo o carro àquele homem.
I sell the car to that man.
Eu vou àquela casa.
I go to that house.
