Do you have mixed feelings? Use apesar de to talk about contrasting ideas.
Apesar de não entender, ele lê o livro.
Although he does not understand it, he reads the book.
You can use apesar de before a whole phrase, or before a noun. Just remember to smoosh de with any other short word that follows it. For example, apesar de plus a becomes apesar da.
Apesar da fome, ele dorme.
Despite the hunger, he sleeps.
