Comparison
Mais ou menos
To talk about quantity or make comparisons, use mais and menos.
Eu vou querer mais manteiga.
I will want more butter.
Eu quero menos leite.
I want less milk.
No inverno, o dia tem menos horas.
In winter, the day has fewer hours.
For better or worse
Just like you can't say more good or more bad in English, you need special words in Portuguese.
É melhor para ele.
It is better for him.
É pior para ele.
It is worse for him.
The same is true for the words maior and menor in Portuguese. You don't use menos and mais here.
Esta mesa é maior.
This table is bigger.
Eu quero um apartamento menor.
I want a smaller apartment.
If you want to say something like the youngest or the best in Portuguese, don't change the word at all! Just add a (feminine) or o (masculine) before expressions like mais novo or melhor.
Quem é o melhor e o pior?
Who is the best and the worst?
Esta menina é a mais nova.
This girl is the youngest.

Feeling extra? Use the word tanto to talk about intensity or a large amount of something.
Eu gosto tanto dele.
I like him so much.
Eu não quero tantos sapatos.
I do not want so many shoes.
Before adjectives, like grande and pequeno, use tão.
Minha mala não é tão grande.
My suitcase is not so big.
These words can be combined with quanto to make comparisons.
Ele lê tanto quanto eu.
He reads as much as I do.
Minha mala não é tão grande quanto a dela.
My suitcase is not as big as hers.
