Use e to combine number words lower than cem. Even when words like mil or milhões come after it.
Noventa e seis pessoas cantam no teatro.
Ninety six people sing in the theater.
Há vinte e quatro mil estudantes no total.
There are twenty four thousand students in total.
Um ano tem mais de trinta e um milhões de segundos.
A year has more than thirty one million seconds.
Don't use e if the number before mil or milhão is only one word.
Ela tem dois mil livros.
She has two thousand books.
A cidade tem uma população de doze milhões de pessoas.
The city has a population of twelve million people.
Did you notice that you use milhões when talking about more than um milhão?

In English, we use words like first, second, third, etc. to talk about the position of something in a list. You can do the same in Portuguese!
