Lado ou ao lado?
The word lado by itself usually means side, but ao lado means next to.
No outro lado da rua.
On the other side of the street.
Elas têm um telefone ao lado de sua cama.
They have a telephone next to their bed.
Similarly, the word direção by itself usually means direction, but em direção de means towards.
