Transportation
Taking the subway
坐 (zuò) means to sit, but you can also use it to describe the type of transportation you’re using. For example, 我坐地铁 (wǒ zuò dìtiě, I take the subway), literally means I sit on the subway.
我们坐地铁去酒店。
(Wǒmen zuò dìtiě qù jiǔdiàn.) We take the subway to the hotel.
他不喜欢坐船。
(Tā bù xǐhuān zuò chuán.) He does not like to take a boat.
下 (xià, get off) + transportation
We’ve seen already that 下 (xià) can mean next (下星期) or under (狗在桌子下). 下 can also be used to say that we’re getting off of a bus, train, etc. In fact, 下车 is used so commonly together that it generally refers to getting off of any vehicle.
我在这儿下船。
(Wǒ zài zhèr xià chuán.) I get off the boat here.
我们在哪个站下车?
(Wǒmen zài nǎ ge zhàn xià chē?) At which stop do we get off?
