了 for a change in situation
We’ve already learned how to talk about completed actions with 了 (le) (for example, 他喝了咖啡) and to use 了 (le) with 太 (tài) to say very, so, or too (for example, 太贵了!) You can also place 了 at the end of a sentence to show that there is a change in a situation.
For example, you might use 了 to say I am sick today (because you weren’t sick earlier) or to say She got off work! (because she was still hard at work until just a few hours ago).
我今天生病了。
(Wǒ jīntiān shēngbìng le.) I am sick today.
我感冒了!
(Wǒ gǎnmào le!) I have a cold!
她下班了!
(Tā xiàbān le!) She got off work!
